[ 0 ] January 27, 2011 |

Attending obedience classes is a great pro-active approach to your Boxer’s training.  This will help your puppy become adept at dealing with many different situations it may come across during its life from a young age.

Obedience classes can be great for older dogs who might be more difficult to train because they are already set in their ways.

At obedience classes you as the owner will be taught to give the correct commands to your dog in a way that they can understand it, so there are benefits for everyone involved not just the dogs.  There is much more to the training program rather than just teaching your dog the basic sit, stay, fetch commands.

You will be introduced to leadership training which focuses on ensuring that you are the dominant one in your relationship with your dog so that they look up to you as their leader and want to obey you.

There is a particular focus on no biting or barking, which will help you address any problems straight away should your puppy start to misbehave. The level of training that you will need to go down to will depend on how much of a problem the biting and barking is.

Lead walking is also an important topic covered.  A lesson in this will help you be the walker instead of your dog!  You will learn tips on how to maintain control of your Boxer should you need to cross roads or face another dog when out on a walk.

After you have completed each session of the training program the more important thing is to teach everyone at home what needs to be done and maintain the discipline.   If you lapse the training at home your Boxer is likely to become confused and not understand what it is you are trying to teach them.
