Jack Russell Terrier Training: Using Hand Signals

[ 0 ] September 5, 2010 |

Successful jack russell terrier training is not attained with one training approach alone. In fact, an owner has extensive training options to take into account in order to make successful training happen. One is the use of hand signals in combination with the verbal commands.

Being a particularly intelligent breed, a jack russell terrier is quite observant of the human’s body language, movement as well as emotional state. One may feel sad or depressed if the owner feels the same or will certainly get thrilled if he sense the excitement in his owner’s voice and movements.

Here are some reasons why it’s best to consider training your pet to be aware of hand signals:

  • Though you always want your canine friend to stay close to you, you can’t avoid the fact that he might have to run off at times – be it to fetch ball, chase someone, hunt in the field or do the agility course. The space can make it hard for your dog to hear your verbal command but with hand gesture, you can be at ease knowing that you are still able to control and keep him safe.
  • Your hunting dog will always look up on you as to what should be done with the quarry he has captured. You can use hand signals to inform him whether to hold in place or bolt the groundhog, badger or other animals he has captured.
  • When you use hand signals during dog training, you can be sure that your pet is focused on you knowing that he needs to watch out for your signals and commands.
  • A dog with hearing disability can be trained using this strategy.
  • Noisy locations like busy streets and park can make it hard for your jack russell terrier to hear your verbal commands. But so long as you are within the viewing distance of your dog, you can still direct him of what he must do particularly during unexpected instances.
